Why is the census date important?

The census day is the last day you can submit your Request for Commonwealth Assistance form to access a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) or a Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loan. If you do not submit your Request for Commonwealth Assistance form by the census date, you cannot access a CSP and/or a HELP loan for that study period, and you will be liable to pay the cost of your degree upfront.

It is also the very last day you can withdraw from a course without financial penalty. You will have a debt for any units of study that you did not withdraw from correctly before the census date.

Help with tuition fees

To get Commonwealth assistance for tertiary study, you must be enrolled with an approved Australian education provider. Find an approved provider.

Commonwealth supported place (CSP)

If you're going to study at an approved provider, you might be enrolled in a place where the Australian Government pays part of your fees. Learn more about CSP’s.

Note: not all eligible students will be offered a CSP, as each provider and each course may have its own entry requirements.

High Education Loan Program (HELP)

If you're going to study at an approved provider, you may be eligible for a HELP loan to assist you to study without the barrier of upfront fees. You pay back your HELP debt through the tax system once you earn above the compulsory repayment threshold.

If you're enrolled in a CSP, you still have to pay for some of your fees. You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan to pay for these. Learn more about HECS-HELP.

If you aren't enrolled in a CSP, you are enrolled in a fee paying place. You may be eligible for a FEE-HELP loan to pay for your fees. Learn more about FEE-HELP.

Each semester you might have to pay a fee for student services and amenities. You may be eligible for a SA-HELP loan to cover this fee. Learn more about SA-HELP.

If you're enrolled in a CSP and want to study overseas, you may be eligible for an OS-HELP loan to help pay your expenses. Learn more about OS-HELP.
