Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic

Install, service and repair refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

Overview

Airconditioning and refrigeration mechanics assemble, install and repair industrial, commercial and domestic air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Work is indoors and outdoors; on construction sites, in commercial buildings and at private homes. Expect to work at heights or in confined spaces such as ceiling cavities.

Suited for those with a practical interest in mechanics, electrics and equipment maintenance. Good customer service and troubleshooting skills are important.

Day-to-day

  • consult with clients and design engineers about system installation
  • establish job requirements from drawings and specifications
  • assemble and install pipe work for refrigeration/air-conditioning systems
  • install or oversee the installation of refrigeration/air-conditioning systems
  • check existing systems for leaks and faults
  • repair and maintain systems; record the cause of malfunctions and the action taken
  • test and balance systems once they are installed.
